Building Our Opposition Coalition

Early Modern Philosopher Thomas Hobbes developed in Leviathan his theory of social contract using a metaphor that he named a “State of Nature”. Hobbes questioned the condition of human life in the absence of any governing entity which applies rules, laws, and order to a society. Essentially, Hobbes’ State of Nature indicates this: chaos exists without a reasonable social contract.
trump’s fascism continuously obstructs our Rule of Law and our Constitution - which is our 238-year-old social contract - as he endlessly challenges our Judiciary. He has also thrust most Americans, except for the oligarchs, into a chaotic Hobbesian State of Nature because trump’s blizzard of illegality pushes every limit. Continually.
For example, trump’s affordability crisis grows daily. This is worsened by his illegal tariffs with their consequential high taxes. trump also disregards the court ruling to release all 300MB of the Epstein files to Congress. He allowed the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 and DOGE to gut our government. He allowed Palantir to grow national databases containing our personal information, and he shamelessly pardoned the J-6ers. trump also encourages the lawless DHS/ICE/CBP to foist itself upon our communities to disappear our neighbors.
Obviously, trump owns the Jan 6 insurrection. He pushes grievance politics every chance he gets in order to push the majority of us (who are non-maga) into a state of heightened despair. How does this despair, this lawlessness, end? We stand in defiance. We stand in opposition. We do not allow trump/maga to force us into despair. Instead, we continue uniting under an opposition coalition to vote the fracturing maga into a rightful minority.
Writers, philosophers, non-maga politicians, and a majority of Americans writ-large agree we must continue building this coalition, the umbrella under which activist organizations and the majority of Americans are coalescing. This is no lofty goal. Had Independents, who voted maga because of trump’s “affordability” lies, instead voted Democrat in 2024, and if Democratic voter turnout had been marginally higher, maga would already be a minority in our US Congress.
To retake the US Senate and US House, which is the only means to hold trump, et. al., to account, we extend this coalition to disaffected, homeless (trump, after all, rebranded their party “maga”)“Republicans”.
Sensible, Rule of Law, Constitutional Conservatives are reaching out in myriad ways. Homeless-but-serious “Constitutional Republicans”, who, yes, have largely kept silent for 11 years, understand that they, too, have no path forward except by joining our coalition, even if only “silently”, until they vote in the midterms.
Today, 79 percent of Independents are already opposed to how maga is forcing DHS/ICE/CMP into our communities. Most Democrats are on board, and even some “maga-lites” have peeled from trump/maga because they did not vote to have their neighbors disappeared without Due Process.
This opposition coalition demands that our Rule of Law function as our Constitution must: we adhere to our founding documents to self-govern. The import of maintaining our Rule of Law transcends all other concerns.
Also, our opposition coalition is a “movement”. A movement is created to move from one point to the next, then to self-evaluate. For now, we have two goals to achieve: to collectively/nationally drive ICE/CBP/DHS from our streets, and to overcome magas in the midterms.
Here in Maine, the minority magas attempt to hold Democrats “accountable” for the affordability crisis. This is their plan. This is their lie. To Maine magas, since Democrats were “in charge” as the affordability crisis and trump’s tariff taxes hit under Democratic leadership, Democrats therefore own the affordability crisis. This “argument” (lie) is obviously disingenuous. Worse, the tariffs have the effect of fundraising off of a working class that essentially is now heavily taxed without representation.
Our opposition coalition’s “vehicle” is the only functioning, Constitutional US Party, the Democratic Party, despite its obvious shortcomings and big money makeup. Again, our coalition is a movement. Democratic Party corruption will be addressed after it sweeps the midterms. One movement at a time.
The Democratic Party obviously faces many challenges, from its weak national leadership to the corrupting influence of money that is funneled into it due to Citizens United, etc. Again, swelling this coalition for the midterms is the movement’s goal. We will address party corruption next because we have limited time to balloon this opposition coalition to take the midterms.
The way forward is to educate, to teach, to bridge, to listen to one another, to accept temporary alliances, to hit the streets in much larger numbers, and to use this coalition to win. We will overcome trump who will find himself 12 months from now returning to his rightful place: hemmed in by courts, the US Congress, and the American people.
Our Constitution determines what happens next to trump. Accordingly, we will Impeach him yet again in the US House, and Convict him in the US Senate once we assume control of Congress. This is how our Constitution directs us to treat corrupt presidents, cabinets, etc.
It’s up to us. We must win the midterms. There is no other way forward.
I do not subscribe to anger-inspired epithets that the Democratic Party is beyond corrupt and therefore beyond repair. I do not accept that we need to burn our entire government to the ground to start over. I do not accept that everything is broken because everything is not broken. I also do not subscribe to building a paramilitary force to violently “battle” everything from the US military to DHS/ICE/CBP.
I understand the anger and incredulity surrounding the Democratic Party’s challenges, however not torching what we can obviously utilize together to overcome maga is most logical; our participation in this opposition coalition is paramount.
American streets are already alive in defiance which itself is alive under many names. Americans are organizing! And yet, like clockwork, countless disparaging comments, misinformation, articles, social media posts, etc., circulate to promote a “disbelief” that such a coalition is even possible. Some even think the midterms will never occur. I do not subscribe to such despair. This is precisely what trump wants us to feel continually to paralyze us.
Still others insist trump will call a “national emergency” to somehow block our midterms. Our midterms face states’ corruptions because state voter suppression laws are aimed at making mail-in voting complicated or outright illegal. This effort is still alive in Maine. Even the notion that trump will sign a (non-binding) Executive Order to “pause” elections circulates. Certainly, trump will try to hold onto power. But this is no time for voter apathy.
We The People cannot allow trump’s continued “unitary executive” overreach. This is his Hobbesian State of Nature: pure chaos.
We are hitting the streets en masse together across the nation, inspired by the Minnesotan response to the violent DHS/ICE/CBP agents. These paramilitary forces are here in Maine to steal 1,400 ‘targets”. We have local battles to wage, therefore our local protests and activisms grow - and our efforts are building! We are growing stronger!
We have already occupied the streets together nationally several times under different banners. Today, No Kings announced that it has scheduled its next massive march - No Kings III - on March 28, 2026. No Kings wants its 3rd march to be “the largest march in American history”. From there, No Kings, and all affiliate groups, will return to their communities to organize as we must to move forward.
The concept of a “General Strike” involving 3.5% of our population pounding the streets together now circulates widely in America. This Strike is signaling the only way forward as trump attempts to “override elections”, as if he could. We will nonetheless meet such a General Strike goal because we can.
Meanwhile, a group of locally elected prosecutors from across the United States just announced today (Jan 28) the formation of a new national coalition aimed at holding federal law enforcement officers criminally accountable when they violate state laws. They are at www.FAFO.org…This development is the fruit of organizations and individuals joining from all sides of the political spectrum to uphold the Rule of Law.
I do not foresee failure simply because we cannot fail. Will this be a fight? Yes. Will we need to hit the streets in large numbers? Yes. Will Russia continue to boost trump’s efforts with election interference? Yes.
But we’re done. No more “bumps”. No more “detoxing”. No more “short-term pain”. No more tariffs/taxes. We have had enough. We will end this illegal revenue-collecting as we take over Congress. We will then impeach trump, his cabinet of Fox Entertainment “News” hosts, and the oligarchs. We then pause to evaluate our success. Next, we take the US presidency in 2028. While not an easy task, this goal is achievable.
We have no time for despair. We have no time for circular firing squads. We cannot throw stones at each other because there is no other way forward but together…We refuse to live in trump’s chaotic, Hobbesian State of Nature. The fascist overtures of Stephon Miller are neither American, nor do Miller’s hateful screeds belong in our American discourse…
So let’s train. Let’s build. Let’s meet. Let’s practice self-care. Let’s communicate. Let’s listen. Let’s use our talents. Let’s invite many others to join our opposition coalition. Let’s move this thing forward together! Many allies and alliances await us just down the road…
Onward!
